Sciatica Treatment in Salt Lake City
Chiropractic Care for Sciatica
Sciatica can cause pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the hip and down the leg, sometimes making sitting, standing, walking, or other everyday activities uncomfortable. Symptoms can vary from a mild ache to sharp, burning, or electric-like pain and may also include tingling, numbness, or weakness in the affected leg.
Sciatica occurs when one or more nerve roots that contribute to the sciatic nerve become irritated or compressed. Herniated discs, age-related changes in the spine, and narrowing around the nerves are among the conditions that can contribute to these symptoms. Because other conditions can sometimes produce similar pain, identifying what may be contributing to your symptoms is an important part of determining the appropriate approach to care.
At Canada Chiropractic, Dr. Angie Canada begins with your health history, symptoms, movement, and examination findings. When chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may include gentle spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, mobility work, and corrective exercises based on your individual needs.
Whether your symptoms developed gradually or began after an injury or activity, the goal is to improve movement and function while addressing mechanical factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.

Common Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica develops when one or more nerve roots that contribute to the sciatic nerve become irritated or compressed. Several spinal conditions can contribute to this pressure, and sciatica may occur alongside lower back pain.
Herniated Disc
A herniated disc in the lower spine can press on or irritate a nearby nerve root, causing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that may travel into the buttock and leg.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing of the spaces within the lower spine can reduce room around the nerves and contribute to sciatic symptoms, particularly during standing or walking.
Bone Spurs
Age-related changes and osteoarthritis can lead to extra bone growth around the spinal joints. These bone spurs may narrow the space around nearby nerve roots.
Degenerative Disc Changes
As spinal discs change with age, they may lose height or flexibility. In some cases, these changes can contribute to narrowing or irritation around a nerve root.
Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra shifts forward relative to the vertebra below it. If this reduces space around a nerve, it can contribute to radiating leg pain or other sciatic symptoms.
Previous Injury
Injuries involving the lower back or spine can sometimes cause swelling, structural changes, or other irritation that affects nearby nerves and contributes to sciatica.
Common Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica symptoms can vary depending on which nerve root is affected and how much irritation is present. Symptoms often follow the path of the sciatic nerve from the lower back or buttock into the leg and typically affect one side of the body.
Radiating Leg Pain
Pain may begin in the lower back or buttock and travel into the hip, thigh, calf, or foot. It may feel like a deep ache, burning sensation, or sharp, electric-like pain.
Tingling & Numbness
Some people experience pins-and-needles sensations, numbness, or altered sensation anywhere along the path of the affected nerve, including the leg or foot.
Muscle Weakness
Nerve irritation can sometimes affect strength in the leg, ankle, or foot. You may notice that certain movements feel more difficult or that the affected leg does not feel as strong as usual.
Symptoms With Sitting or Movement
Sciatic symptoms may worsen with prolonged sitting, bending, coughing, sneezing, or certain movements and positions. Others may notice increased discomfort during standing or walking, depending on what is contributing to the nerve irritation.
Please note: Sudden or worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or inner thighs requires prompt medical evaluation.

How Chiropractic Care May Help With Sciatica
Sciatica can have different underlying causes, so treatment should be based on what is contributing to your individual symptoms. At Canada Chiropractic, Dr. Angie Canada, DC evaluates your health history, movement, spinal function, and examination findings before recommending a care plan.
When chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may include gentle spinal adjustments to improve joint mobility and movement, along with soft tissue therapy, mobility work, and corrective exercises when those approaches are relevant to your needs. The goal is to support comfortable movement and function while addressing mechanical factors that may be contributing to nerve irritation or your symptoms.
Care is individualized rather than based on the same routine for every patient. If your symptoms suggest significant nerve involvement, require imaging, or would be better evaluated by another healthcare provider, Dr. Canada can recommend the appropriate next step.
