TMJ Treatment

In Salt Lake City

Jaw pain, stiffness, clicking, or difficulty opening and closing your mouth can make everyday activities such as eating, speaking, and yawning uncomfortable. At Canada Chiropractic, we provide TMJ treatment in Salt Lake City with care focused on improving jaw movement, addressing muscle tension, and helping reduce discomfort associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

The temporomandibular joints, commonly called the TMJ, connect the lower jaw to the skull and play an important role in chewing, speaking, and other jaw movements. Problems involving these joints and the surrounding muscles can contribute to jaw pain, tightness, clicking or popping, and difficulty moving the jaw comfortably. Treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, jaw movement, and the factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.

Understanding TMJ Dysfunction

Common Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction

TMJ dysfunction can affect people differently, and symptoms may involve more than just the jaw itself. Common signs and symptoms may include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
  • Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably
  • Tightness or fatigue in the jaw muscles
  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Pain around the ear, cheek, or side of the face
  • Neck or facial muscle tension
  • Headaches that occur along with jaw tension

Because these symptoms can have different causes, an evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your discomfort and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your needs.

What Can Contribute to TMJ Problems?

TMJ discomfort can develop from a combination of factors involving the jaw joint, surrounding muscles, and everyday habits. Teeth clenching or grinding may place additional stress on the jaw muscles and joints, while prolonged muscle tension can make normal jaw movement uncomfortable.

Previous injuries involving the jaw, face, or neck may also affect how the area moves and functions. For some people, posture and tension through the neck and upper body may contribute to muscle tightness around the jaw. Identifying these contributing factors can help guide an individualized approach to care.

How TMJ Treatment Works

TMJ treatment may involve addressing both the jaw joint and the muscles that help control jaw movement. Some of these muscles, including the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles, are located inside the mouth and can become tight or tender when jaw function is disrupted.

When appropriate, Dr. Canada may use a gloved finger to gently assess and apply targeted pressure to tight areas within these muscles. This intraoral technique is performed carefully and according to the patient’s comfort level.

Treatment may also include gentle techniques applied externally around the temporomandibular joint to help improve movement and reduce surrounding muscle tension. The specific approach depends on your symptoms and how your jaw responds to treatment.
