When Should You See a Chiropractor for Neck Pain?

Chiropractor evaluating a patient’s neck

Updated September 2026

Neck pain is common and can develop for many reasons, including prolonged sitting, repetitive activity, exercise, previous injuries, joint stiffness, and muscle tension.

Sometimes symptoms improve with movement, activity modification, and time. In other cases, persistent or recurring neck pain may benefit from a closer evaluation.

At Canada Chiropractic in Salt Lake City, Dr. Angie Canada, DC evaluates neck pain based on the patient’s symptoms, movement, health history, examination findings, and goals rather than assuming every case needs the same type of treatment.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

Neck discomfort can have many possible contributors. Common musculoskeletal factors may include:

  • Prolonged computer or desk work
  • Repeatedly holding the head in one position
  • Muscle tension
  • Changes in mobility
  • Exercise or sports activity
  • Repetitive movements
  • Previous injuries
  • Age-related joint changes
  • Everyday physical strain

Mayo Clinic notes that neck pain commonly becomes worse when the head is held in one position for long periods, such as while driving or working at a computer, and that muscle tightness, reduced motion, and headaches can occur with neck pain.

When Neck Pain May Be Appropriate for Chiropractic Care

Some types of neck pain may be appropriate for conservative chiropractic evaluation when there are no warning signs suggesting a more serious condition.

  • Neck stiffness or reduced mobility
  • Discomfort that changes with movement or position
  • Muscle tension associated with prolonged sitting or repetitive activity
  • Recurring neck discomfort
  • Activity-related neck pain
  • Pain associated with certain mechanical or musculoskeletal factors

An evaluation can help determine whether joint mobility, muscles, soft tissues, movement habits, or other musculoskeletal factors appear relevant to the symptoms. Learn more about Neck Pain Treatment.

What Does a Chiropractic Evaluation for Neck Pain Include?

A neck-pain evaluation should involve more than simply identifying where the patient hurts. Dr. Canada may consider when symptoms began, whether there was an injury, what movements or positions change the pain, whether symptoms travel into the shoulder or arm, numbness or tingling, weakness, previous injuries or episodes, work and activity demands, range of motion, and neurological findings when relevant.

The goal is to understand the overall presentation before deciding whether chiropractic care appears appropriate. Treatment should not begin with the assumption that every painful neck simply needs to be adjusted.

What If Neck Pain Travels Into the Shoulder or Arm?

Neck pain that extends into the shoulder, arm, or hand may deserve closer evaluation. Radiating pain, numbness, tingling, burning, changes in sensation, or weakness can sometimes indicate irritation involving a cervical nerve.

Not every case of arm pain originates in the neck, so symptom location alone is not enough to determine the cause. An examination can help determine whether symptoms appear musculoskeletal, nerve-related, or whether another type of evaluation may be appropriate.

When Neck Pain Needs Prompt Medical Evaluation

Most neck pain is not caused by a medical emergency, but some symptoms should be evaluated promptly. Seek appropriate medical care if neck pain follows a significant accident, fall, or other trauma; is severe or rapidly worsening; is accompanied by significant weakness, difficulty walking, balance problems, worsening numbness or tingling, fever, a severe or unusual headache, or other concerning neurological symptoms.

Mayo Clinic advises emergency evaluation for severe neck pain after significant trauma and recommends medical attention when neck pain is accompanied by weakness, trouble walking, fever, or other concerning symptoms. Do not assume these symptoms are simply muscle tension or routine neck stiffness.

Do You Need X-Rays for Neck Pain?

Not necessarily. Imaging is not automatically required for every person with neck pain. Whether X-rays, MRI, or another test may be appropriate depends on the patient’s health history, whether significant trauma occurred, neurological findings, severity and duration of symptoms, whether symptoms are improving, and whether another condition needs to be ruled out.

Dr. Canada considers the individual presentation before recommending additional evaluation. Not every chiropractic patient needs X-rays before treatment.

What Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain May Include

If the examination suggests that chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment may include chiropractic adjustments or joint mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, mobility work, exercise recommendations, and advice related to activity or movement.

The specific approach depends on symptoms, findings, comfort, and goals. Spinal manipulation and mobilization may help some people with acute or chronic neck pain, but the available evidence is not uniform and treatment should not be presented as a guaranteed solution. Is a Popping Sound Necessary During a Neck Adjustment?

No. Some chiropractic adjustments produce an audible popping or cracking sound and others do not. The sound itself is not the treatment goal and does not determine whether treatment was effective. A joint may move without producing a pop, and a loud sound does not mean an adjustment was better.

Should You Crack Your Own Neck for Neck Pain?

Occasional painless popping during normal movement is not necessarily concerning. Repeatedly forcing the neck to crack is different.

If you frequently feel the need to twist or pull your neck until it pops in order to get relief, it may be more useful to determine why the area repeatedly feels stiff or uncomfortable. Read Is Cracking Your Own Neck Dangerous?.

What Can You Do for Mild Neck Stiffness at Home?

For mild, uncomplicated stiffness, simple measures may help: changing position after prolonged sitting, taking movement breaks during desk work, gentle neck movement within a comfortable range, moving the shoulders and upper back, adjusting computer or screen height, avoiding prolonged end-range positions, and gradually returning to normal activity.

You do not need to force the neck to stretch or crack. If symptoms persist, worsen, repeatedly return, or begin interfering with daily activities, an evaluation may be appropriate.

How Long Should You Wait Before Having Neck Pain Evaluated?

There is no single timeline that applies to everyone. Mild neck stiffness related to activity or prolonged positioning may improve within a short period.

Consider an evaluation sooner if pain is significantly limiting activities, symptoms keep returning, movement is increasingly restricted, pain is worsening rather than improving, symptoms travel into the arm, or numbness, tingling, or weakness develops. You do not need to wait several weeks if symptoms are substantially affecting work, sleep, exercise, or normal activities.

Dr. Angie’s Approach to Neck Pain

Dr. Angie Canada, DC has practiced chiropractic since 2012 and takes an individualized, evidence-informed approach to musculoskeletal care. Her background includes chiropractic training, Sports & Exercise Science, and 13 years of prior massage-therapy experience.

When evaluating neck pain, she considers joint movement; muscles and soft tissues; activity and movement patterns; previous injuries; neurological findings when relevant; and the patient’s health history and goals.

The objective is not simply to produce an adjustment. It is to determine what may be contributing to symptoms and whether chiropractic care, soft-tissue treatment, exercise recommendations, medical evaluation, or another approach appears appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neck Pain

When should I see a chiropractor for neck pain?

A chiropractic evaluation may be appropriate when neck pain appears musculoskeletal, particularly when symptoms involve stiffness, restricted movement, muscle tension, or activity-related discomfort and there are no red-flag symptoms.

How do I know if my neck pain is serious?

Seek medical evaluation when neck pain follows significant trauma or occurs with substantial weakness, difficulty walking, worsening neurological symptoms, fever, or an unusual severe headache.

Can a chiropractor help with a stiff neck?

Some types of neck stiffness may be appropriate for conservative chiropractic care. An examination can help determine whether joint mobility, muscles, soft tissues, or other musculoskeletal factors may be contributing.

Do I need an X-ray before seeing a chiropractor for neck pain?

Not necessarily. Imaging should be based on individual history, examination findings, trauma history, neurological symptoms, and other clinical considerations rather than routinely performed for every case.

What if my neck pain goes into my arm?

Pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness extending into the arm may suggest possible nerve involvement and deserves evaluation. Significant or progressively worsening weakness should be assessed promptly.

Should I crack my own neck if it feels stiff?

You do not need to force your neck to crack. Gentle movement and changing positions are better first steps. If you repeatedly feel the need to crack your neck for relief, an evaluation may help determine why stiffness keeps returning.
